The Great Gainesville Road Race 5K has been Gainesville's premier road race since its first running in 1990. The race features a relatively flat course around Lake Alice on the University of Florida campus. The race begins and ends near the Harn Museum of Art off SW 34th Street. RUN WITH THE BEST IN NORTH FLORIDA This year's race will also feature prize money - $100 for the top male and female, $100 for the top male and female masters runner, and $20 to each age group winner (NO duplication of prizes). The 5K is part of the Florida Track Club Grand Prix Series. The 5K course is a loop that starts downhill followed by a flat first mile, then rolling hills until a downhill finish. The 1-mile Dog Run is at 9 AM and is for dogs and their owners. The Dog Run goes around the perimeter of the park. State Championship The Micanopy Half Marathon is USATF-certified (FL99045DL) and will begin at 8 AM. In addition to the usual awards, the first 200 finishers will receive an award commemorating their participation in this event. This race is a perfect warm-up for your fall or winter marathon: New York, Jacksonville, Disney, Ocala, or Gainesville! There will also be a FREE Fun Run at 8:30 AM for any runner - young or old - with a trophy for the first male and female finisher. There will be no trophies or other awards for any runner. And we will not be producing any T-shirts for runners. However, this will be a great opportunity for local runners to run a CERTIFIED 15K run and support one of the biggest charity events in Gainesville - the March of Dimes WalkAmerica. We will be providing race numbers and timing for runners. Runners will start 5 minutes before the walkers and will start and finish along SW 34th Street near Westside Park. Show your pride in America and wear the red, white, and blue and kick off the Fourth in style! This year we will have the usual highlights everyone expects from the run - plenty of watermelon and refreshments at the finish, the coveted singlet t-shirts, a fun race course at Westside Park, trophies for the top male/female, masters male/female and the first male and female walker! And at 9 AM we will have the ever popular FREE 1 Mile Fun Run for kids of all ages. Each finisher of the Fun Run will receive a medal and popsicle and we will have trophies for the first place boy and girl. In addition, the Melon Run is the last Grand Prix event for the 2005-06 racing season. So, many of you will want to pick up some points to catch your age-group rival! Besides, it's a great way to set a PR in the 800 meters or the 3200 meters. Or, a way to get in a track workout with lots of other fellow FTC runners. Try it, you'll like it! Come out and enjoy the scenic beauty of one of Florida's most beautiful rail trails - the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail. No car traffic!! Walkers Welcome!! The trail takes you past an overlook of Paine's Prairie, side trails to ponds full of alligators, and over a varied terrain (both hilly and flat). We hope you will find this a fun place to run - many runners, walkers, and bikers use the trail every day and enjoy the varied terrain and wildlife. The race is part of the 2006-2007 Florida Track Club Grand Prix Series! Remember, kids under 17 are free (not including t-shirt). | 8/25/07 | Florida Track Club Summer Picnic and Grand Prix Awards Presentation - 11 AM to 4 PM at Poe Springs Park Our annual summer picnic will be held at Poe Springs Park. It is FREE for all FTC members, their family, and guests. The Florida Track Club will pay for park admission and will provide drinks, plates, utensils, etc. All we ask is that you bring a covered dish to the picnic. If you have never been to Poe Springs, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to cool off with a swim in the spring, watch the alligators, hike thru the park, or go for your daily run in a scenic setting. We will have the picnic inside the Air-conditioned Lodge (which has full kitchen facilities), so it will happen rain or shine. Along with the picnic dinner, we will have a little kids fun run with medals for the runners, a raffle of prizes, all kinds of awards, etc. How can you go wrong on such a deal? Directions to the park: Take I-75 to US-441 and then into High Springs. Follow the brown "springs" signs through the town to County Road 340. Poe Springs is located approximately 3 miles west of High Springs on CR 340. It is the first spring along the road and is located on the north side of the road. | 10/6/07 | 26th Annual Dog Days 5K Run - 8 AM at Westside Park Come out and support one of the oldest and most popular runs in Gainesville. The UF student chapter of the Veterinary Medical Association along with the Florida Track Club host the 26th Annual Dog Days 5K at Westside Park. The 5K is part of the Florida Track Club Grand Prix Series and starts at the top of the hill on NW 31st Drive heading downhill towards 8th Avenue. The rest of the first mile is flat until runners go up the infamous 8th Avenue Hill, followed by rolling hills and a fast downhill finish. The 1-mile Dog Run is at 9 AM and is for dogs and their owners. The Dog Run goes around the perimeter of the park. Special Awards will be given to the overall winner for 0-40 lbs. and 40 lb., Dog and Owner Look-Alike Award, Dog Most Likely To Pull Owner, Slowest Dog, Smallest Dog, Biggest Dog, and Cutest Dog. (located about 5 miles east of downtown Gainesville). The Newnan's Lake 15K begins and ends at Earl P. Powers Park (boat ramp) on Newnan's Lake off Hawthorne Road. The course is mostly shaded and runs out and back on Lakeshore Drive following flat, fast roads along picturesque Newnan's Lake. The Newnan's Lake 15K is one of the prettiest 15K races in the state, with nearly perfect weather every year. Awards will be given to 1st place male/female, 1st place master's male/female and the top 3 in each age group. We will be featuring a new type of t-shirt for this race - very similar to cool-max. They were very popular for the Micanopy Half-Marathon! Runners will start promptly at 8 AM! Walkers may, at their option, start at 7:30 AM. However, walkers must keep their own time if they start early and report it to the official scorer after the race!! - 8 AM at Pony Field on UF Campus Join us for the 5th Annual edition of this running event. This race combines the SunState Federal Credit Union 5K and the Great Gainesville 5K Road Race into one big run. We will have all the usual awards for the top male, female, masters male, and masters female finisher. In addition, note that Students (with ID) and runners age 17 and under run FREE. And, of course, T-shirts will be available for $8!! The Proceeds from this run will benefit a number of local Gainesville charities. | 7/4/08 | 30th Annual Melon Run 3 Mile - 8 AM at Westside Park On Friday, July 4th, 2008, we will celebrate the 232nd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 30th year of the Melon Run. Show your pride in America and wear the red, white, and blue and kick off the Fourth in style! This year we will have the usual highlights everyone expects from the run - plenty of watermelon and refreshments at the finish, the coveted singlet t-shirts, a fun race course at Westside Park, trophies for the top male/female, masters male/female and watermelons for all the age group winners! And, making a return this year we will once again have a unique course setup. Men and Women will run on the same course, but in opposite directions. Registration and the awards ceremony will be held in front of the entrance to the Spurgeon Cherry public pool at Westside Park. The race starts on the street east of the pool house. And at 9 AM we will have the ever popular FREE Kid's Fun Run for kids of all ages. Each finisher of the Fun Run will receive a medal and popsicle and we will have trophies for the first place boy and girl. In addition, the Melon Run is the last Grand Prix event for the 2007-08 racing season. So, many of you will want to pick up some points to catch your age-group rival! Children are encouraged to become fit and have fun using basic track, field, and running skills. No matter what sport, running is usually the basis for skill development. Emphasis of the program is for youths to feel positive about fitness, regardless of age or ability level. | 8/10/08 | Florida Track Club Summer Picnic and Grand Prix Awards Ceremony - 12 PM to 5 PM at Poe Springs Park Our annual summer picnic will be held at Poe Springs Park. It is FREE for all FTC members, their family, and guests. The Florida Track Club will pay for park admission and will provide drinks, plates, utensils, etc. All we ask is that you bring a covered dish to the picnic. If you have never been to Poe Springs, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to cool off with a swim in the spring, watch the alligators, hike thru the park, or go for your daily run in a scenic setting. We will have the picnic inside the Air-conditioned Lodge (which has full kitchen facilities), so it will happen rain or shine. Along with the picnic dinner, we will have a raffle of prizes, all kinds of awards, etc. How can you go wrong on such a deal? - 8 AM at Southwest YMCA Complex (9409 SW Archer Road) A new event for Gainesville. The FTC will perform the timing for this “Run through the Woods”. Make sure you register early for this charity race for the new YMCA! The 4 Mile course will be run over both a variable terrain (flat, soft sand, canopy road) and a paved road/trail. The 1-mile youth run is mostly on a paved trail around the new property, but it finishes with a 100 yard grassy field sprint. The Tikes on Trikes course consists of a trike/bike course, an obstacle course, and a sprinkler run. Day of Race Registration will start at 7 AM. Dr. Robert Cade’s Family has long supported the camp, now in its 36th year. Dr. Cade is a physical fitness pioneer and inventor of Gatorade. His energy replenishing creation is so simple and yet so famous a product. This same energy is transferred with his unwavering support, as he believes in the Junior Champ program objectives to promote life long fitness through track, field, and running activities. All in all this program’s growth and success is due to the Dr. Robert and Mary Cade family. | 9/12/09 | 28th Annual Dog Days 5K Run - 8 AM at Westside Park Come out and support one of the oldest and most popular runs in Gainesville. The UF student chapter of the Veterinary Medical Association along with the Florida Track Club host the 26th Annual Dog Days 5K at Westside Park. The 5K is part of the Florida Track Club Grand Prix Series and starts at the top of the hill on NW 31st Drive heading downhill towards 8th Avenue. The rest of the first mile is flat until runners go up the infamous 8th Avenue Hill, followed by rolling hills and a fast downhill finish. The 1-mile Dog Run is at 9 AM and is for dogs and their owners. The Dog Run goes around the perimeter of the park. Special Awards will be given to the overall winner for 0-40 lbs. and 40 lb., Dog and Owner Look-Alike Award, Dog Most Likely To Pull Owner, Slowest Dog, Smallest Dog, Biggest Dog, and Cutest Dog.
