On Friday, July 4th, 2008, we will celebrate the 232nd anniversary of
the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 30th year of
the Melon Run. So, show your pride in America and wear the red, white,
and blue to kick off the Fourth in style!
This year we will have the usual highlights everyone
expects from the run - a fun course for the run, plenty of
watermelon at the finish, the coveted singlet t-shirts, and the
FREE Kid's Fun Run for kids of all ages. We will also have
trophies for the top overall runners and watermelons for all the
age group winners.
And, making a return this year we will once again have a unique course setup.
Men and Women will run on the same course, but in opposite directions.
Registration and the awards ceremony will be held in front of the entrance to
the Spurgeon Cherry public pool at Westside Park. The race starts on the street
east of the pool house.
And at 9 AM we will have the ever popular FREE Kid's Fun Run for kids of all ages.
Each finisher of the Fun Run will receive a medal and popsicle and we will have
trophies for the first place boy and girl.
In addition, the Melon Run is the last Grand Prix event for the
2007-08 racing season. So, many of you will want to pick up some
points to catch your age-group rival! Or, you may need to volunteer
to be eligible for the season awards. If you would like to help out
at this year's Melon Run, contact Jeff Plasschaert at (352) 378-8725 or
plassj@shands.ufl.edu. We can use help with set-up, clean-up, course
marshalls, water table, food table, awards, watermelons, the Fun Run,
and a couple of bicycle riders. Seems like a lot, but it really
isn't when you have many helping hands - and you can even run the race
and volunteer, too!
